The department of Biotechnology was established in 1996 under self financed programme. The department has erected basic experimental facilities for M.Sc. practical and project work The students of the department are regularly sent to work in different Universities and other prestigious institutes.
Biotechnology has rapidly emerged as an area of activity having potential impact on virtually all domains of human welfare, ranging from food processing, protecting the environment, and increasing the agricultural productivity to human health. The total volume of trade in biotechnology products is increasing sharply every year and it is expected to soon become the major contributor to the world trade.
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 1996 under self-financed programme. The department has well equipped laboratories with horizontal and vertical electrophoresis systems, PCR Thermal cycler-20o C Refrigerator, Electronic Balances, Laminar Air Flow Hoods, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Pentium-4 Computer, UV Trans illuminator, Refrigerated Centrifuges, Water Distillation Unit, Micropipettes, Gel Documentation System, Hybridization Oven, BOD Incubator with Shaker, ELISA reader, LCD projector, slide projector, etc. The department plans to procure a few other major equipment in near future.
Programme/ Courses
M.Sc. (Biotechnology) (CBCS)
It is a two–year (four semesters) full time, self– financed Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) based programme with research work thesis. The research work can be completed in-house and/or other scientific/professional laboratory.
About Program
Full time course spread over four semesters. This includes Fundamentals of Genetics, Cell Biology, Tools & Techniques in Biotechnology, Bio-statistical Methods, Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Recombinant DNA Technology and Genetic Engineering, Computer Applications and Bioinformatics, General Microbiology, Animal Biotechnology & Immunology, Biotechnology in Crop Improvement, Plant Genetic Resources: - Conservation and Their Sustainable Use, Advances in Nano-biotechnology, Genomics and Proteomics, Bioethics Intellectual Property Rights, Biosafety and Research Methodologies, Industrial Biotechnology & Bioentrepreneurship. Department is also offering two open elective courses (Trends in Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology) for the students studying in courses other than biotechnology.

Eligibility Conditions
Bachelor‟s degree in Biology (CBZ)/ Biotechnology/ Microbiology, B. Pharma or B.Tech. Biotechnology or Bachelor‟s degree in Laboratory/Medical laboratory techniques with 50% marks.
B.Sc. Biotechnology (Hons.)
It is a three year full time, self– financed programme with dissertation work in the fourth semester. The project work can be completed in-house and/or other scientific/professional laboratory.

Molecular Biology Laboratory:
The Molecular Biology Laboratory in the Department of Biotechnology is equipped with Bio-Rad PCR and Gel Documentation System with Camera Facility, DNA extraction and estimation, DNA cloning, transformation, hybridization, protein isolation and estimation, Gel casting and electrophoresis, basic immunological reactions, ELISA Plate reader, Liquid Nitrogen Tank, Demonstration Fermentation facility etc.
Nanobiotechnology Laboratory:
The Nanobiotechnology Laboratory in the Department of Biotechnology conducts research in many fields but has a primary focus on the development of nanotraps, nanofertilizer and nanopestisides based on nanoparticles and their in vitro and field applications. The equipment available at the laboratory enables it to conduct a full cycle of the focused nanobiotechnological research. This includes synthesizing inorganic nanoparticles of different shape, sizes, size modifications, alloy materials and testing the interaction of nanomaterials with animate and inanimate objects.
Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory:
The Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in the Department of Biotechnology is equipped with LAF, incubation room with temperature controlling facility, tissue culture shelves, autoclave, attached chemical store, BOD, BOD with orbital shaker etc. The equipment available at the laboratory enables it to conduct fundamentals of the plant cell/tissue culture research.
