The department of Economics was established in 1977 with the objective of promoting post-graduate studies and research in Economics with special thrust on emerging areas in theoretical and applied Economics. The Department of Economics with its team of well- qualified and experienced teachers provides a thorough and in depth training in theoretical and applied economics through its various courses of study. The main objective is to develop skilled manpower capable of analyzing economic problems at different levels of sophistication and suggesting solutions in terms of policy. The students of the department have been well received in the job market and their performance in terms of the success rate at different national examinations has always been above average. It is reflected through their placement in various organizations which include the academic and research institutions at higher level, civil services, commercial banks, the Reserve Bank of India, private corporate business houses, etc. The University of Meerut established departments of teaching and research in 1969 in the shape of two divisions, namely Physical Sciences and Plant Sciences. A third division namely Behavioral Sciences consisted of Sociology, Psychology and Education was added in 1970.The Department of Sociology started in the year 1970.The department thus has been coordinating programmes of M.A., M.Phil. and research covering various areas of academic interest. It is one of the very first centers which introduced a quality improvement programme for research, in between M.A. and Ph.D., in the form of M.Phil. programme.Ever since the recognition of economic factors as the key ingredients of the development of a society or human development, for that matter the importance of economics as a subject of study has grown tremendously. The increase in the demand for professional economists is emerging and new areas are the natural outcome of this development. In addition to the commercial and manufacturing enterprises, both the public and private sector, absorbing a bulk of the manpower trained economics, today there is hardly any social, administrative or developmental organization where the services of economics are not needed.

Post-Graduate Course
M.A is a two year full time post-graduate programme.
M.Phil Program
It is a one year programme for students with a post-graduate degree in Economics, which may also lead to research program leading to Ph.D. in suitable cases.
Ph.D. Program
It is a research programme culminating in a doctoral degree for M.A and M.Phil students. The main thrust areas of department with an orientation in quantitative techniques are Economics of Industry and Public finance and Indian Economic Problems and Policies. The department has a computer to facilitate the work involving applications of quantitative techniques.

Programmes / Classes
The department is currently offering the follwing regular programmes of study :

    Duration:
    (i)  M.A. (Economics) Programme
    It is two years (four semesters) full time course.
    (ii) M.Phil. Programme
    It is a one year (two semesters) course involving courses in Research Methodology and economic theory and Indian economy. In addition to the theory courses, the students are required to submit a dissertation at the end of the final semester.
    (iii) Ph.D. Programme
    It is a research programme culminating in a doctoral degree for M.A. and M.Phil. students. The main trust areas of department, with an orientation in quantitative techniques, are Economics of Industry, Agricultural Economics, Public Finance, International Economics, Finance and Trade, and Indian Economic Problems and Policies.

    Eligibility Conditions:
    (i)  M.A. (Economics) Programme
    Second class Bachelor’s Degree (including concerned subject) with 55% marks and second division in intermediate Examination or 50% in each of the Bachelor’s Degree and intermediate Examination, separately. For admission to M.A. (Economics), candidates having B.A./B.Sc. degree with Mathematics as one of the main subjects at 10+2 or graduation level or those with B.B.A./B.Com./B.C.A. degree are also eligible.
    (ii) M.Phil. (Economics) Programme

    Master’s Degree in concerned subject with 55% marks. The eligibility conditions regarding Bachelor’s degree and Intermediate Examinations are same as for admission to M.A. programmes.
